Cinematic Issues in Contemporary Art

Gitte Ous' famous cinematically inspired portrait series of her daughter & friend July, 2008

with Su Ballard!

OK, here we're talking about what cinema has given artists throughout time, being from 1646 when Kircher made a light-projecting mirror apparatus, to the Lumiere Brothers in 1895, Actualitees, being the famous first cinematic inventors.

At the first 50 years, the age of the film, movies are big bussiness in a depressed America, and little European Art statements flourish. Len Lye is my favorite so far :)

After the war, things got nasty in America, with some political issues where actors and producers were being prosecuted according to ideas & beliefs. The film industry goes from Dream World to Horror World, and starts analysing social and political issues. The NOIRE becomes a word for the darkness in human psyce/big cities.

The MAN I Hate Edward Hopper made disgusting paintings of filmstills inspired by Noire. I must -as usual - admit I love them considering the new information I just got... Amazing how he makes real life look like it was a part of a movie. Which I definitely agree to some extent it can seem like. There is something remote & far fetched about how people act & react sometimes; believeing we're stars in a movie-set, or about to be... Maybe the Big Brother system has gotten into our collective psyche?

Spaghetti on the oven-top... Just a minute :)

Well -

Sue talks about Deluze & Bergson.

Deluze wrote 2 volumes on movies, divided by the way they r filmed;
Time movement / image movement

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA, how wrong was that??? Who's tired?? I was wondering why it did not make any sense... G...

Time Image / Movement Image

-the actor is -the actor does
self concious narrative action

-Divided by ; When What drives the story foreward; narrative action or self-analysis.

BERGSON was into the fact that time is 1 thing; DURATION another, and it is meassured by the Lengths of a Life Time.

HAPTIC; another Bergson word - UNDERSTANDING/ PERCIEVING THROUGH TOUCH/ TOUCH can be SIGHT...

Sugar Water, 1996 by Michael Gondry is example of Movement Image, as the movie is pushed foreward by movement; tho it messes with the idea of time.

OH MY EYES R DRY BY NOW,

-Willie Dowgherty, Nonspecific Threat, 2005
Movement + time image has been inverted. His facial expressions gives an anticipation of physical action, but he never moves, what so ever. Awkward!!

In my happy Little Life tho, there has been joys & laughter since I got my Sepia 1 weeks ago! The Worn-Out-Mother Homeopathic remedy. Energy-levels shot through the roof, which means I have energy to do the dishes AFTER one day in school... eh hehehehe, AND, after listening to Su's lecture, I discovered

I memorize in COLOUR & STILLS, very very interrewsting;
AND
MAINLY WHEN STRONG COLOURS / ANIMALS are involved.
-food for thought
AND I do really really really want an octopus Tattoo***
